Monday Motivation: say it ain’t “no”

The end of year often means an increase in responsibilities, tasks, projects, assignments, family commitments, and stress. Somehow, it’s still assumed that all of those “requirements” can be met and that you’ll still be home and in bed by a reasonable hour.

Let me just skip ahead: it is UNREASONABLE for people to expect themselves or others to work themselves into exhaustion or worse.

It is okay to say no to commitments and get-togethers planned by family and friends if you need rest. In fact, it’s okay to say no irrespective of the reason being known to them.

It is okay to ask for extensions or additional support on projects and assignments. It is also okay to ask for priorities to be realistic, based on time and resources available.

If you take anything away from this post, just know that it is 100% acceptable to put yourself first. Your health and well-being should always come first. Despite being such a small word, saying “no” can feel like a large undertaking. I’m not always the best recipient of my own advice, so I admit to being overwhelmed by my own willingness to commit and to perform at the highest possible level.

It’s okay to be bad at saying no, because I’m trying to get better at it. There’s an intention I’m willing to put into the universe: I will say no more, to protect my well-being.
